This next picture of how your baby looks inside your body at 20 weeks.

Pictures supplied by the Science Photo Library.

What is Happening Inside Your Body?

Can you believe it? You have made it half way through your pregnancy! Your entire pregnancy lasts 40 weeks.

The top of your uterus should now be about the same level as your navel. Your healthcare provider will be measuring the size of your uterus at each appointment. It should be growing about ½ inch per week from now until the end of your pregnancy.

Your lung capacity is continuing to increase. Your lungs are breathing up to 40 percent more air than they did before you were pregnant. You may be breathing at a faster rate than before. Some women feel some shortness of breath. This is due to both increased respiration and pressure from your growing baby and breasts.

By now you have most likely begun to feel your baby’s movements.

How Big is a Fetus at 20 Weeks?

Your baby is about 6 inches long from crown to rump, and about 9-10 inches long from head to toe. It weighs approximately 9 ounces.

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby’s skin is thickening and the layers of skin are developing. Your baby is beginning to develop eye motion.

Myelin is beginning to develop in the brain. Myelin is a protective sheath that insulates the nerves and nervous system. Myelin is comprised of 80% fat and 20% protein. The development of this protective layer will continue through the first years of your baby’s life.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

You may want to consider supplementing your diet with Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are important for your baby’s brain development.

By this point in your pregnancy you have, on average, gained between 24 and 29 pounds.

You are really getting big now, and the size of your belly is probably making you quite uncomfortable. You are likely feeling very tired and sore at this point. Time starts to feel like its slowing down it gets closer to the end of your pregnancy.

As the time comes closer to your delivery, you may start to feel more anxious about the birth. You may be feeling moody, emotional or irritable. Feeling emotional is very normal.

To help ease your concerns, educate yourself. Read books about childbirth and talk with other women about their birth experiences. Research the different childbirth methods and pain relief options that are available. Keep an open mind. When the time comes you will be able to make all the right decisions for yourself.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is 16-20 inches long and weighs about 5 ½ pounds.

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby is continuing to add on weight, putting on fat all over its body.

Your baby is pretty fully developed now. Your baby’s hair, toenails, and fingernails are fully formed. From this time on your baby will be able to survive outside of the womb without a lot of medical intervention, though staying in the womb longer will mean a healthier baby at birth.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Your doctor will probably want to start seeing you every week now until the end of your pregnancy.

Your baby’s birth is only a few weeks away now. Be sure that you have a car seat ready. It is a good idea to have it installed in the car so that you don’t have to figure out what to do at the moment you are getting ready to leave the hospital.

Make sure you have selected a pediatrician for your baby. Your baby will need a pediatrician immediately after it is born and making that decision now will make things much easier when the time comes.

By the end of your pregnancy you will have gained on average between 25 and 35 pounds.

You may be noticing the development of enlarged veins or varicose veins in your legs. Some women develop spider veins also. Varicose veins are caused by weaknesses in the valves in the veins that carry blood back to your heart.

If you are experiencing varicose veins or swelling in your legs, try to avoid standing for long periods of time. Make sure you are moving frequently. Walking will help improve circulation. Try wearing support panty hose. It can help compress the tissues and improve circulation.

It is also essential to drink plenty of fluids. Drinking a lot of water will help keep you hydrated and prevent your body from retaining so much water. This will help take pressure off of your circulatory system.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is about 14-17 inches long and weighs about 3 pounds.

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby is adding fat and putting on weight steadily. From now until the end of your pregnancy, your baby will put on about ½ pound every week.

Your baby has doubled in height in the last six weeks. From this point until delivery it will probably only grow a few inches taller, but will pack on significantly more weight.

Your baby’s brain is still rapidly developing.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Sciatica, pain in the side of the back that runs down the hip and leg, is common during this stage of pregnancy. It is caused by changes in posture as well as pressure from your baby on the sciatic nerve.

This condition can spontaneously disappear if your baby changes positions and alleviates the pressure.

If you are having difficulty with sciatic pain, pregnancy yoga can be helpful. Some women get relief from acupuncture, massage, chiropractic treatments and pregnancy pain relief techniques.

What is Happening Inside Your Body?

You may begin feeling some pregnancy symptoms this week. Your body is producing copious amounts of pregnancy hormones. These hormones will have a widespread effect on your entire body.

Hormones will begin stimulating your breasts to produce breast milk. This can lead to breast tenderness. They will widen your blood vessels, drawing more of your blood toward your growing baby. This can lead to dizziness as your body draws blood away from your head and toward your pelvis.

Hormones will slow down your digestion, influence your brain chemistry, sharpen your sense of smell, and loosen your ligaments in your body to help make room for your baby to grow. You may feel digestive disturbances and nausea. You may experience mood swings or feel emotionally sensitive as hormones make changes in your brain and body.

You may start to feel fatigued or need to urinate more frequently, and you may feel some discomfort in your back or body as your ligaments begin to loosen. All this is normal and a sign that your body is doing its important job to nourish and care for your baby to be.

Your body has not begun to expand yet, and there are no big changes in your outward appearance.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is about 2 millimeters long. It has now been 3 weeks since conception.

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby has now begun to develop a neural tube, which is the beginning of the development of the brain and spinal cord. It also has also begun to develop a tube in the center of the embryo which will soon form the heart. The tube will start beating between day 21-24 of the embryo’s development.

What Does a Fetus Look Like at 5 Weeks?

To give you the best example of what your fetus is doing, we are linking you to a great video showing the development of your baby. Please understand that the video is based on the conception date. Click here.

Here a video explains about how the babies brain develops. Click here.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

If you haven’t yet done so, arrange for your first prenatal visit. You may want to interview some different obstetricians and midwives as well as tour the different hospitals and birthing centers they work with. This will help you find the care that is just right for you.

If you have begun to experience morning sickness, please view the section of our website about morning sickness during pregnancy for some great information on managing your symptoms.

The top of your uterus is 6 ½ to 6 ¾ inches above your belly button. Your uterus may measure the same size as it did last week. You have on average gained 25 to 35 pounds.

You may be having frequent Braxton-Hicks contractions, as your body is preparing itself for labor. As long as your contractions remain irregular, it is not generally a sign of labor.

As your body prepares for the delivery of your baby, your cervix will begin to dilate (become larger) and efface (soften). You may pass the mucus plug that has been blocking the opening of your cervix. This has served to keep bacteria from getting into your uterus.

The loss of the mucus plug can happen up to two weeks before labor begins, or it can happen at the beginning of labor.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is 17 to 21 inches long and weighs about 6 ½ pounds.

What Does a Fetus Looks Like at 37 Weeks? - Video

Here is a video of a baby in the womb at week 35 since conception. This would be your week 37.
Click to watch video

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby’s body fat has increased to about 8%. By birth it’s body fat will be about 15%.

By the end of this week your baby will be considered full-term. Your baby could be born at any time, but the longer it stays inside of you, the more time it will have to develop more neural connections in its brain.

Some of the antibodies in your blood are crossing into the placenta, which will help support your baby’s immune system. Once born, your breast milk will transmit your immunities.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Hormones are working aggressively to soften the ligaments in your pelvis. Your joints may be feeling loose and you may be feeling clumsy.

Try swimming. It will help your body feel supported and allow you to move freely and gently, helping your range of motion and flexibility without any impact.

Take extra good care of yourself now. Take it easy and get plenty of rest, fluids and nourishment. You will want to have plenty of energy when your baby arrives.

What is Happening Inside Your Body?

Your uterus is growing and expanding. This can put pressure on your sciatic nerve, causing sciatic nerve pain. This feels like an occasional excruciating pain in the buttocks and down the back or side of the legs. This can occur at any time from now until the end of pregnancy, and is caused by pressure on the nerve from the expanding uterus.

You may also start to experience sharp pain on either side of your pelvis, especially from twisting related movements or when transitioning from sitting to standing up. Your growing uterus can cause strain on the round ligament, which are the muscles that support the uterus and hold it in place.

The volume of blood in your body has continued to increase. Your blood volume may have increased by as much as 40-50%, as your body pumps more blood to help feed your baby.

You may be experiencing gas, constipation, or diarrhea, as well as continued nausea. If you are going to have morning sickness, it will have likely developed by this point in your pregnancy.

Your breasts have probably begun to grow. They may be feeling tender or sensitive. This is normal as your body gets ready to produce milk. Many women’s breasts will increase a cup size or more during the course of their pregnancy. It is not unusual for a large portion of this growth to occur during the first trimester.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is a little more than ½ inch long, about the size of a kidney bean. It has been 6 weeks since conception.

What Does a Fetus Look Like at 8 weeks? - Video

If you are looking for What does a fetus look like at 8 weeks?

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby’s arms and legs are continuing to develop. The eyes and ears are beginning to grow. The nose and mouth are recognizable and the outside ears are beginning to grow.

The liver is now beginning to manufacture blood cells and the kidneys have developed but are not yet functioning.

Embryos in their sixth week of development begin to have spontaneous movements and reflexes such as twitching in the body and limbs in response to touch. The body at this point reacts equally to any and every type of stimulus.

Your baby’s heart is pumping at about 150 beats per minute, about two times the rate of an adult.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

It is never to early to start practicing Kegel exercises. This exercise strengthens the urogenital muscles which support the pelvic floor. Good tone in these muscles will help you to recover your muscle tone after childbirth and help prevent problems with incontinence.

To practice Kegel exercises, tighten up the same muscles you would use to stop the flow of urine. At first you can practice on the toilet. Then they can be done any time. Contract the muscle as many times in a row as you can as tightly as possible with as many repetitions as possible. It will be very helpful later in pregnancy and after childbirth if you begin these exercises now.

You are feeling huge and ready to get this baby on the outside! Most women do not deliver on their due date. If your due date has come and gone, don’t worry.

What is Happening Inside Your Body?

You are feeling huge and ready to get this baby on the outside! Most women do not deliver on their due date. If your due date has come and gone, don’t worry. About 10 percent of babies are born more than 2 weeks late.

Your pregnancy is not considered overdue (called post-term) until it is more than 2 weeks past the due date. Your due date is definitely not an exact science. As a matter of fact, only 5 percent of women actually deliver on their due dates.

Try to stay as relaxed as possible. Walking can help you to feel better and looser and may also encourage labor to come.

You may not feel like doing much at this point. Try to enjoy this time as much as possible. Relax, and know that your baby will come when the time is right.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is 18 to 21 ½ inches long, and weighs 7 to 8 pound. Your baby may vary slightly from this weight. In general, boy babies are slightly larger, and girl babies are slightly smaller.

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby is continuing to grow new connections in its brain and is putting on more weight.

No one knows exactly what will initiate labor. The placenta is what will get the labor process started by producing a hormone called corticotrophoin (CRH). This creates a chain reaction of other hormones, which will lead to the birth of your baby.

The placenta begins producing CRH early in pregnancy. It continues to increase steadily until labor is triggered.

Soon you will come face to face with your new baby.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Continue to practice relaxation and breathing exercises to help you prepare for childbirth. The more easily and naturally you can do them, the easier it will be when the time comes for your new baby to be born.

Pregnancy has been a huge journey. Now that your child will be born, another new journey will begin.

Most likely, you have not experienced many changes in the last week or so. Though you are not having many changes you can see outwardly, most likely inside your cervix is beginning to prepare for the birth of your baby.

What is Happening Inside Your Body?

Most likely, you have not experienced many changes in the last week or so. Though you are not having many changes you can see outwardly, most likely inside your cervix is beginning to prepare for the birth of your baby.

As your labor gets closer, your cervix will soften and get thinner and dilate.

You are most likely feeling tired of being pregnant and increasingly ready for the birth of your baby to begin, especially as your friends and family bombard you with phone calls to find out if you have given birth to your baby yet.

Remember to try to enjoy this time. Take time for yourself and pamper yourself as much as possible. You probably won’t have this much time for yourself for a long time.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is 18 to 21 ½ inches long and weighs about 7 to 7 ½ pounds.

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby has now lost most of the vernix and lanugo hair that used to cover its skin. You will likely still see remnants of both at birth.

Your baby has put on more fat tissue under its skin and will be more able to hold its body temperature once it is born.

Your placenta will continue to give your baby a wealth of antibodies to help protect it from infection and illnesses. This will be vital to your baby in the first 6 months of its life. You will continue to provide many of these antibodies to your baby through your breast milk if you choose to breast feed your baby.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

If you have the time and energy now, you may want to cook up some extra meals or stock up on some frozen foods and easy to prepare meals to help take the pressure off once your baby is born.

You will be very busy taking care of your new baby once it is born. Take the time now to make sure everything is organized and in order so you won’t be under any undo pressure once the baby comes.

The top of your uterus is about 6 ½ to 7 ½ inches above your belly button. Many women will not grow any larger during the last few weeks of pregnancy.

This last stretch of pregnancy can be the most difficult and trying. You are likely feeling tired, fatigued, having back and neck pain, and feeling anxious and emotional. You may be having trouble sleeping and finding a comfortable spot.

You are probably running to the bathroom often now, as the pressure on your bladder is increasing all the time.

You may not feel very hungry due to the pressure on your stomach, but keep eating frequent small meals. Also, be sure to keep well hydrated.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is 17 ½ to 21 inches long and weighs about 6 ¾ pounds. Around this stage of pregnancy babies can vary a lot in height and weight. The average newborn is 21 ½ inches long and weighs 7 ½ pounds.

Here is the last video we have on the fetal development it explains how your baby decides when to be born…click to watch video

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby is still rapidly growing new connections in its brain. This will continue after birth.

Your baby’s organs are mature. Its movements are restricted due to the tight space.

If you have not done so please watch the videos on vaccinations entitled H1N1 Vaccine Your Worst Nightmare? . The information in these videos are from experts in the field who are trying to protect you and your baby.
