What is Happening Inside Your Body?

month4Your uterus is continuing to grow. You should be able to easily feel your uterus about 3 inches below your belly button.

Your uterus and pelvic area are beginning to feel firm and heavy, as the volume of amniotic fluid has been increasing. There are now about 7 ½ ounces of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby.

Pressure on your bladder can make you feel like you have to go more frequently. Additionally, hormones are relaxing the muscles of your uterus, which carry urine to your bladder from your kidneys. This, together with the weight of your baby, can slow down the flow of urine.

Slower urine flow can make you more susceptible to urinary tract infections. If you are experiencing any burning on urination together with frequent urination or a fever contact your healthcare provider to check for a urinary tract infection. Other symptoms of urinary tract infection may include abdominal pain and backache.

How Big is Your Baby?

Your baby is about 4 ½ inches long. It has been 14 weeks since conception.

How is Your Baby Developing?

Your baby is continuing to develop its facial muscles, allowing it to make a variety of expressions. These movements are not the expressions of emotions.

Your baby is continuing to actively move its arms and legs. You will begin to feel these movements soon, generally sometime between 16 and 20 weeks.

Beginning at 16 weeks, your baby’s eyes become sensitive to light. By now your baby has begun swallowing. Also the small intestines are beginning to produce waves of involuntary contractions that later will help push food through the digestive system.

Your baby’s fingerprints have been developing. They will be completely established in the next 3 weeks.

Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Once you are 16 weeks along, most health care providers recommend that you do not sleep on your back. Side sleeping is recommended. It is still ok to recline in a chair or propped against pillows. Use as many pillows as you need to get comfortable. You may want to consider a body pillow or pregnancy pillow, especially as your belly gets bigger. Good sleep is essential to keep you feeling good.
